Creating a Next.js app with Mongoose

After this tutorial, you should be able to use Mongoose in your Next.js application API endpoints.


You will need to have Node.js version 8.x or higher installed. If you haven't already installed Node.js, you can do so by following the instructions here. Additionally, you will need to have a MongoDB database running either locally, on a remote server, or on a cloud service such as MongoDB Atlas.

Creating a blank Next.js app

First we need to create a blank Next.js app. I am using the create-next-app command. If you are like me then you probably want to use TypeScript in this project which can be done by simply adding the --typescript or short -ts flag to the command.

    # using npx
    npx create-next-app@latest nextjs-with-mongoose --typescript
    # using yarn
    yarn create next-app nextjs-with-mongoose --typescript

Next we want to cd into the new created directory using the command cd nextjs-with-mongoose.

Installing Mongoose

To connect to a MongoDB Database we first need to install the mongoose package.

    # using npm
    npm install mongoose
    # using yarn
    yarn add mongoose

Implementing Mongoose

Let's start by creating a new folder called lib and then create a new file called mongoose.ts inside of it. If you aren't using TypeScript create a file called mongoose.js instead. Then we need to create another file in the root of our project called .env. This is where we will store our MongoDB connection information.

Let's enter our login information.

Next we will write our connection code
